Reflection
Throughout my time in the Instructional Technology program, I have worked as an academic librarian. I have felt like my academic goals were very aligned with my professional goals while I was completing assignments for my courses. Technology in libraries is constantly changing and growing and that makes it necessary for librarians, like other educators, to stay updated on their skills and connected with other professionals so that they do not fall behind in offering the support that students need. The artifacts I chose for this standard reflect the blending of my professional and academic life.
- This artifact is a paper illustrating that my experience on the job directly informed my desire to create a tutorial on using the article database ScienceDirect. The paper required a needs assessment, a statement of goals and rationale, a learner analysis, context analysis, and a statement of performance objectives. I also created an assessment strategy, just as I would for a real tutorial. I believe that this reflects the standard by showing a use of technology based on professional practice.
- This paper, “Managing Learning Objects in Academic Libraries: Bringing Law and Order to the Wild West” was written for IT650 but was based on a real professional problem. As librarians struggle to keep up with the needs of the communities that they support, they are creating more and more learning objects. There needs to be a way to catalog and share these objects to save time and effort and also to increase the chances that new and better objects can be created if time isn’t wasted recreating the basics. This paper explores the use, and potential use, of Learning management systems, content management systems, OPACS and discovery systems, and social bookmarking systems. I believe that this reflects the standard by showing an examination of current research to potentially impact professional practice.
- This site was created for IT755 and contains biographical information, aspirations, a philosophy of online learning, a curriculum vita, and a section of resources on health sciences librarianship, educational technology, and online education. The creation of this site is a way of connecting with the professional world and of offering useful resources to other educators. Personal web sites can be used as vehicles to find collaborators, co-authors, potential employers, and to spread information to a professional community. I believe this reflects the standard by contributing to the community and profession.

Future Learning Goals
My profession requires that I always continue to develop new skills and learn new things. I have recently moved into a community college environment and I am very interested in finding new associations and professionals to connect with. In an environment where publication is not required for tenure, I am very interested to seek out the literature and see what I can find on Learning Resources Centers and student needs in this context.
